ZigZag Mittens – Crochet Pattern

V-Stitch Cluster MittensThere was this fun hat going around in a crochet group on facebook which I worked up and loved, but it was missing something. Especially with temperatures creeping into real feels in the negatives. So I decided to create some matching mittens. I just love how they turned out and I hope you will, too!

Materials:
– ½ skein of worsted weight yarn in color A.
(I used Hobby Lobby’s I love this Yarn! in Aubergine)
– ½ skein of worsted weight yarn in color B.
(I used Hobby Lobby’s I love this Yarn! in Ivory Tweed)

– Size H (5.0mm) Crochet Hook
– Size G (4.0mm) Crochet Hook
Size:
Small Child – 6″ long x 3″ wide (4.5″ long not including cuff)
Medium Child – 8″ long x 3.5″ wide (6.5″ long not including cuff)
Petite (Large Child/Small Adult) – 9″ long x 3.5″ wide (7.5″ long not including cuff)
Medium Adult – 9″ long x 4″ wide (7.5″ long not including cuff)
Large Adult – 10″ long x 4.5″ wide (8.5″ long not including cuff)
Guage:
2.5 v-st cl x 4 rows = 2″ x 2″
Abbreviations:
ch(s) = Chain(s)
sp(s) = space(s)
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl st = Slip Stitch
sk = Skip

hdc = Half Double Crochet
dc = Double Crochet
blo = Back Loop Only
fpdc = Front Post Double Crochet
bpdc = Back Post Double Crochet
RS = Right Side
WS = Wrong Side
FO = Finish Off

Special Stitches:
MC – Magic Circle
dc cl – Double Crochet Cluster – *Yarn over, insert into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over pull through next 2 loops, leaving stitch unfinished. 2 loops remaining on hook. Repeat * 2 more times which will add an additional loop per repeat. 4 Loops remaining on hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
V-st cl – V-Stitch Cluster – Do one dc cl into the stitch, ch 1, and then do the 2nd dc cl into the same stitch. Also see the Cluster V-Stitch Hat video.
beg V-st cl – Beginning V-Stitch Cluster – [ch 2, dc in same stitch](counts as first dc cl), ch 1, then work dc cl in same stitch.

To Change Color in Hdc: Yarn over and draw up a loop in the last st of the row, drop the color in use; with next color to be used, yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook. Continue with new color. For more helpful tips for changing color seamlessly, check out Crochet Jogless Stripes.

    Love!!! Worked these last night. I had to make a few minor changes to the rounds as I must have smaller hands than most small/medium people. I just used my hands as a guide. Now I have some mittens to try out while training for our winter marathon!
