I have been working up some of the sea creatures from the Adventures in Mochimochi Land: Tall Tales from a Tiny Knitted World
book as they are quick, fun projects to work up. I decided to add a seahorse to my collection and came up with my own design for one that was close in size to the other sea creatures. I hope you enjoy this pattern, too!
Materials:
- Lion Brand Yarn 601-610 Bonbons Yarn, Brights
Light Weight (3): 100% acrylic; 0.35oz/10g; 28yd/26m. - Size US3 (3.25 mm) Knitting Needles (4 dpns)
- Stitch Marker
- Yarn Needle
- Tiny amount of fiberfill
- 2 Tiny black beads
- Sewing thread
Size:
2 ¾” long x 1-2″ wide
Gauge:
7 stitches x 9 rows = 1″ x 1″
Not critical for this design.
Difficulty:

Abbreviations:
K – Knit
P – Purl
K2tog – Knit two stitches together (decrease)
P2tog – Purl two stitches together (decrease)
kfb – Knit front and back (increase)
m1 – Make 1 stitch (increase)
i-cord
short rows
w&t – Wrap & Turn
Seahorse Pattern:
Worked in the round using short rows. Stuff with fiberfill as you go.
With yarn and US 3 needles, cast on 4 stitches.
Round 1-2(work as i-cord): knit (4)
Round 3: k1, kfb twice, k1 (6)
Distribute stitches evenly onto 3 needles.
Round 4: knit
Round 5: k1, kfb, k2, kfb, k1 (8)
Round 6(work as short rows): k2, kfb, k1, M1, kfb, w&t; p 7, w&t; k5, w&t; p3, w&t; k to end. (11)
Round 7: knit
Round 8(work as short rows): k2, k2tog, k3, k2tog, w&t; k5, w&t; k3, w&t; p1, w&t; k to end. (9)
Round 9: knit
Round 10: kfb, k7, kfb (11)
Round 11: purl
Round 12: kfb twice, k7, kfb twice (15)
Round 13-14: knit
Round 15: kfb, k13, kfb (17)
Round 16: purl
Round 17: knit
Round 18: k2tog, k13, k2tog (15)
Round 19: knit
Round 20: k2tog twice, k7, k2tog twice (11)
Round 21: purl
Round 22: k2tog, k7, k2tog (9)
Round 23: knit
If you haven’t done so already, make sure body and head are stuffed.
Round 24: k2tog, k7, k2tog (7)
Round 25: k2tog, k3, k2tog (5)
No need to stuff tail with fiberfill.
Round 26: k4, w&t; p3, w&t;, k2, w&t; p1, w&t; knit to end.
Round 27: knit
Round 28-31: Repeat rounds 26 & 27 twice.
Round 32: k2tog, k1, k2tog (3)
Pull tail through remaining stitches and pull tight. FO. Shape tail to curve. Sew eyes to head.
Fin:
Between bottom 2 ridges (rounds 17-20) at the back of the seahorse’s body, pick up 4 stitches.
Row 1: *k1, p1* repeat twice.
Row 2: kfb, p1, k1, kfb (6)
Row 3: *p1, k1* repeat 3 times.
Bind off in *p1, k1* pattern.
FO. Weave in tail.
